The Best Baby and Toddler Stacking Toys for Building Fine Motor Skills

Stacking toys are great for developing young minds in many ways. The best stacking toys offer multiple ways to learn and play to keep kids interested and getting the most out of each toy. Stacking toys can be arranged in many different ways: straight up, short and wide, multiple stacks, and any other way their creativity can come up with. They can help develop hand-eye coordination, counting, problem solving abilities, and creative expression, as well as concepts of size, color, and numbers. Below I have collected the stacking sets that best fit these criteria and are available on the ever amassing Amazon.

Fisher-Price Rock-A-Stack

The classic rainbow colors rings with and easily to handle, wide yellow peg. The base and attached yellow peg wobbles for added fun. The red ring also acts as a rattle with little colored beads inside. For only $4.99 USD, this is a great starting place and, as my youngest has taught me, the rings make great teethers.

Sassy Stacks of Circles

A fun twist on the classic rings and peg, this toy has lots of fun colors and patterns on its rings. These rings also come in different thicknesses to help baby learn to grasp the big ones and then the little ones. One clear ring has colorful beads inside to act as a rattle and draw babies attention. Along with varying sizes, colors, and patterns, these rings also have different textures for further development (and fun teething potential). This version of the classic is a great step up at $8.99 USD and as a winner of the National Parenting Product Award in 2018.

Wood City Sorting & Stacking Toy

Not only does this help develop fine motor skills, it also helps with counting and numbers. The stackable pieces of this toy are colored and in different shape with different amounts of pegs for each. There's a slot with 1 peg with circular pieces, a slot with 2 pegs with rectangular pieces, a slot with 3 pegs with triangular pieces, a slot with 4 pegs with square pieces, and a slot with 5 pegs with pentagonal pieces. See the pattern? The shapes almost always have the same amount sides as they do pegs for stacking. The pieces also come in red, orange, yellow, green, and blue for each slot. This toy has a lot going for it, a lot of ways to learn, and is only $13.99 USD.

Fisher-Price Baby's First Blocks and Rock-A-Stack

The First Years Stack Up Cup Toys

I've used these toys before, they're strong and sturdy plastic that have a different vibrant color for each cup. They also have small shaped holes in the bottom of each cup for water play and to remove suction when the cups are placed inside of one another and then pulled apart. The bottoms also have the number of holes written on it for recognition. These are a great, easy to use toy that can be used in a variety of ways and is only $3.99 USD.

Mushie Stacking Cups Toys

These toys are much like the previous stacking cups but with some key differences. These are made in Denmark, have far more fun and complex holes in the bottoms (don't have numbers though), and are available in a much more natural color hue. They are 100% free from BPA, PVC, and phthalates. Available in two naturally colored hue sets, they cost $14.99.

This stacker is the epitome of colorful, it's literally the rainbow! It can be stacked from smallest to largest and look like a regular rainbow, stacked from largest to smallest and form a semicircle tower, they can be laid flat to create shapes and figures, and even stacked in more odd and complicated ways by testing out weight distribution. It's a very colorful and creative but simple stacker toy that could provide hours of fun (I think even for me!) and it's only $19.99.

Stacking Peg Board Toy Set

I left this one for last because I think it gives the most potential but also could be the most advanced. It comes with 60 pegs for stacking and play, an organizing peg board, stacking cups, and a carrying bag. It can be used to organize by colors, patterns, and coordinating colors. It can be great for counting obviously. This set is great for stacking, sorting, and creating is is available for $17.97 USD.
